The 任 family: 就任, 赴任, 着任
Three words in this list all translate loosely as 'taking up a post' but differ by their first kanji: 就任 (shuunin) emphasizes formally assuming a role, such as being named chairman; 赴任 (funin) emphasizes heading off to a new location, typically a transfer to another branch or city; and 着任 (chakunin) emphasizes arrival at the new post. The same 任 (duty, post) kanji also appears in 任務 (mission) and pairs with 責 in 責任 (responsibility) and 責務 (duty) — four related but non-interchangeable words built from just two kanji. Separately, listen carefully for 決算 (kessan, settlement of accounts) versus 決裁 (kessai, approval decision): they differ by a single mora and kanji, both belong to the same office context, and mixing them up is a common N2 listening trap.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 昇進 and 昇格?
Both describe moving up at work, but 昇進 (shoushin) refers to a promotion in job title or position, such as moving from 主任 to 係長, while 昇格 (shoukaku) refers to moving up a formal internal rank or salary grade, which may happen without a title change. 昇進 is the far more common, general-purpose word; 昇格 shows up mainly in HR and personnel-system contexts.
Why does this list have both 得意先 and 顧客 for 'customer'?
得意先 (tokuisaki) specifically means a regular business customer your company has an ongoing account with, a B2B relationship, while 顧客 (kokyaku) is the broader, more formal term covering any customer, individual or corporate. 代理店 (dairiten, agency) is different again — it is an intermediary that sells or represents your product, not the end customer itself.
