4 Tips for Conjugating い-Adjectives
- Past tense: drop い → add かった. 楽しい (fun) → 楽しかった (was fun). 難しい → 難しかった (was difficult). Works for every single い-adjective without exception.
- Negative: drop い → add くない. 怖い (scary) → 怖くない (not scary). 暑い → 暑くない (not hot). Past-negative: 暑くなかった (wasn't hot).
- て-form connects ideas: drop い → add くて. 安くておいしい = cheap and delicious. 楽しくて嬉しい = fun and happy. Use this to chain two descriptions together.
- Adverb form: drop い → add く. 優しい (kind) → 優しく (kindly). 早い (fast) → 早く (quickly). This turns an adjective into an adverb you can attach to verbs.
FAQ
What's the difference between 暑い (atsui) and 熱い (atsui)?
Same reading, different kanji. 暑い is for hot weather or ambient temperature ("it's hot outside"). 熱い is for a physically hot object — "hot coffee," "hot soup." Context usually makes it clear; the kanji removes all ambiguity in writing.
Is つまらない really an い-adjective?
Yes — it ends in ない (which ends in い), so it conjugates exactly like an い-adjective. Past tense: つまらなかった (was boring). Negative: つまらなくない (not boring). Same rules, no exceptions.
How do I say "too ~"?
Drop the final い and add すぎる: 高すぎる (too expensive), 辛すぎます (too spicy), 難しすぎる (too difficult). Works identically for all い-adjectives.
What's the difference between 楽しい and 嬉しい?
楽しい describes an activity being enjoyable — "the party was fun." 嬉しい describes the personal feeling of gladness — "I'm happy you came." 楽しい = it's fun; 嬉しい = I feel glad.
