The 在 (existence) family: 遍在, 内在, 顕在, 潜在

Four words in this list share the kanji 在 ("to exist") with a prefix that specifies how: 遍在 (existing everywhere, ubiquitous), 内在 (existing within, inherent), 顕在 (existing visibly, manifest), and 潜在 (existing hidden, latent). 顕在 and 潜在 form a genuine antonym pair frequently tested together (顕在化する "to become manifest" vs 潜在化する "to go latent"). Separately, 骨格/骨子/根幹/中核/基軸 all metaphorically describe the "core structure" of something — an argument, an organization, a plan — but differ in register: 骨格 and 骨子 (skeleton, framework) are slightly more concrete, while 根幹 and 基軸 (root/axis) are more abstract.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 乖離 and 逸脱?

乖離 describes two things drifting apart or diverging from each other (e.g. 理論と現実の乖離, the gap between theory and reality). 逸脱 describes a single thing departing from an expected norm or path (e.g. 常識から逸脱する, to deviate from common sense). 乖離 is about distance between two points; 逸脱 is about leaving a defined boundary.

How do 内包 and 外延 relate to each other?

These are a formal logic pair: 内包 is the "intension" of a concept — the defining properties it necessarily contains — while its counterpart 外延 (extension) is the full set of things the concept applies to. Both appear in academic writing about definitions and categorization.
