The 症 (symptom/condition) and 病 (illness) kanji families

Several words build on 症 to name a specific manifestation: 症例 (a clinical case), 発症 (onset of a disease), 炎症反応 (inflammatory response) — versus 病 words that name the illness itself: 病巣 (lesion, literally the illness's "nest"), 病態 (pathological condition), 病理 (pathology). A genuinely useful distinction for N1 readers: 完治 means fully cured with no relapse expected, while 回復期 is the recovery phase before that point is reached — a news article about a patient's status will usually specify which one applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 悪性 and 良性?

These are a direct antonym pair used almost exclusively for tumors and growths: 悪性 (malignant, cancerous) versus 良性 (benign, non-cancerous). They rarely appear outside a medical diagnosis context.

How is 加療 different from just 治療 (treatment)?

治療 is the general, everyday word for medical treatment. 加療 is a more formal, written-register synonym used in official medical documents and reports (全治2週間の加療を要する, requiring two weeks of medical treatment to fully heal) — you'll see it in news reports about injuries far more than in conversation.
