Why N1 i-adjectives are a small, literary category
Japanese stopped productively coining new i-adjectives centuries ago in the way it still coins new na-adjectives and nouns from Chinese roots — most everyday i-adjectives (高い, 新しい, 楽しい) are learned by N4-N3. What remains at N1 is a small set of literary, descriptive words that survived into modern written Japanese specifically because they capture a nuance no na-adjective or compound quite replaces, like ものものしい (an exaggerated, overly solemn atmosphere) or そらぞらしい (transparently insincere). Several, like うら寂しい and きな臭い, are compounds built on a familiar root (寂しい, 臭い) with a prefix that sharpens the meaning.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does きな臭い actually mean — does it relate to smell?
Literally it means "smelling of gunpowder," but in modern usage it almost always means "suspicious" or "having an ominous, unsettled feel" (国際情勢がきな臭くなってきた, the international situation is starting to feel ominous). It rarely describes an actual smell anymore.
How is なれなれしい different from just being friendly?
なれなれしい specifically means overfamiliar in a way that oversteps social boundaries — acting too casually or intimately with someone you don't actually know well. It's almost always used critically, unlike genuinely positive friendliness words.
