Compound verbs built from everyday roots

Most of this list is built by combining a common verb root with a directional or manner verb: 押す (push) + 切る/通す/流す/広げる gives 押し切る, 押し通す, 押し流す, 押し広げる; 引く (pull) + 裂く/剥がす/伸ばす/込む/寄せる gives five more compounds. Once you recognize this pattern, an unfamiliar compound verb becomes decodable from its parts rather than needing separate memorization — 差し出す (hold out) and 差し向ける (dispatch/send toward) both come from 差す + a directional verb, for instance. The 絞る/搾る pair is a classic homophone-kanji distinction: 絞る is the general "wring/narrow down" verb, while 搾る specifically means squeezing liquid or value out of something (乳を搾る, to milk; 搾取する, to exploit).

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 彫る and 彫刻する?

彫る is the general verb for carving or engraving (木を彫る, to carve wood). 彫刻する is more formal and specifically refers to sculpture as an art form — you'd use it discussing a sculptor's work in an art context, while 彫る covers any carving, from woodblock prints to a child's whittling.

How is 賄う different from just 払う (to pay)?

賄う means to cover or provide for a need using available resources — often money, but also staff, food, or supplies (予算で賄う, to cover with the budget; まかない, a word derived from this verb, means staff meals at a restaurant). It implies making do with what's on hand, which 払う (simply "to pay") doesn't.
