The 見 (seeing) compound-verb family
A cluster of these verbs build on 見る (to see) to describe increasingly sophisticated forms of mental "seeing": 見据える (to fix one's gaze on, to face squarely — often figuratively, "見据えた計画" a plan that looks ahead clearly), 見渡す (to survey, look over a wide area), and the compound nouns 洞見/観破 (both meaning penetrating insight — seeing through to the truth of something). Separately, this list contains five near-synonyms for "infer/guess" (推察する, 推測する, 推理する, 憶測する, 類推する) that differ mainly in formality and method: 推理する is the most systematic (deductive, as in detective fiction), 憶測する is the most casual and often carries a negative "baseless speculation" nuance, and 類推する specifically means inferring by analogy to something already known.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 懸念する and 危惧する?
Both mean "to be concerned/worried about," but 危惧する is stronger and more formal, often used for serious, specific risks (絶滅が危惧される, extinction is feared) — you'll see it constantly in the set phrase 絶滅危惧種 (endangered species). 懸念する is milder and broader, closer to general concern about an ongoing situation.
How does 忖度 differ from simply guessing someone's feelings?
忖度 means inferring someone's unstated wishes or feelings and then acting on that inference — often preemptively, to please a superior or avoid conflict, without being explicitly asked. It became a widely-used word in Japanese political news around a 2017-2018 scandal and carries a connotation of reading between the lines in a socially loaded way, not neutral guessing.
