This set covers 103 abstract N2 words for perspective, reasoning, structure, and logical relationships — the vocabulary that underlies opinion pieces, essays, and analytical writing rather than everyday conversation. N2 is where Japanese shifts from concrete, situational vocabulary to this kind of conceptual language, so these words show up constantly in the reading and listening sections once a passage starts arguing a point rather than just describing an event.

The 点 suffix family, and a homophone trap
Five words here are built on 点 ('point'): 観点, 視点, 要点, 焦点, and 重点 each pair 点 with a different first kanji — view, see, essential, focal, weight — to distinguish an angle of view from a summary point, a focus, or a priority. A parallel pattern uses 性 to turn a quality into an abstract noun: 合理性, 妥当性, 整合性, 一貫性, and 関連性 are how N2 passages say 'rational,' 'valid,' 'consistent,' and 'relevant' as nouns rather than adjectives. Watch the near-homophone trap in the comparison group: 対照 (contrast/juxtaposition) and 対称 (symmetry) are both read taishou despite opposite meanings, while the visually similar 対比 (also 'contrast') is read taihi — three words learners routinely mix up on N2 reading questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 対比, 対照, and 対称?
対比 (taihi) means actively comparing two contrasting things, as in 新旧を対比する ('contrasting old and new'). 対照 (taishou) describes two things that stand out in contrast when placed side by side, while 対称 (also read taishou, different kanji) means symmetry — a balanced correspondence, the opposite of a contrast. Because 対照 and 対称 share a reading, mixing them up is one of the most common N2 vocabulary mistakes.
How do 判断, 判断力, and 判断基準 relate to each other?
判断 (handan) is the act of judging itself, as in 状況を判断する ('judge the situation'). 判断力 adds 力 ('ability') to mean the capacity to judge well, while 判断基準 adds 基準 ('standard/criterion') to mean the criteria a judgment is based on. Recognizing that N2 compounds often build outward from a simple base word like this makes the longer forms easier to remember.
