Formal connectors vs. everyday intensifiers

This list mixes two registers that N2 learners often blur together. Words like したがって, そもそも, すなわち, and いわゆる are written-style discourse connectors — they show up constantly in editorials and formal essays but rarely in casual conversation. By contrast, words like ぐっと, めったに, and たいして are everyday spoken adverbs. A useful test: if a word could open a paragraph in a newspaper column (ひいては, 一概に, いかんせん), treat it as formal register; if it modifies a verb in casual speech (かろうじて間に合った, めったにない), it's conversational. かならず and かならずしも are also worth pinning down early, since they're near-opposites (かならず = always, かならずしも〜ない = not necessarily) that are frequently mixed up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between したがって, ひいては, and いっぽう?

したがって means "therefore/accordingly" and marks a direct logical conclusion. ひいては means "and by extension/ultimately," showing a knock-on effect beyond the immediate result. いっぽう means "meanwhile/on the other hand," contrasting two parallel situations. All three are common in N2 reading passages that build an argument across several sentences.

How is かならずしも different from めったに and ろくに?

かならずしも always pairs with a negative verb to mean "not necessarily" (高いからといって、必ずしもいいとは限らない). めったに also pairs with a negative to mean "rarely," describing frequency rather than certainty. ろくに (also negative-paired) means "not properly/hardly," describing the quality or completeness of an action, such as ろくに寝ていない (barely slept).
