Three words for 'summary': 要旨, 概要, 要約
This list packs in three near-synonyms for 'summary' that learners commonly conflate: 要旨 is the gist or core claim of a piece of writing (what an essay is fundamentally arguing), 概要 is a broad outline covering the overall shape of something like a syllabus or plan, and 要約 is an actual condensed rewrite of a text - the word used when an exam asks you to shorten a passage. A similar trap sits with 検証 (testing a hypothesis against evidence), 実証 (demonstrating something empirically), and 証明 (a formal, often logical or mathematical proof) - all loosely translate as 'verify' or 'prove' but differ in rigor and domain. It also helps to notice how many words here build on 論 (theory, argument): 理論, 論理, 論点, 理論的, 論述, 論拠 - once that root is recognized, unfamiliar academic compounds on the exam become much easier to guess.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 履修 and 受講?
履修 means formally registering for and completing a course for credit, as part of a degree curriculum tied to 単位 and 課程. 受講 just means attending or taking a class or lecture, credit or not - you can 受講 a single seminar without 履修-ing anything. N2 passages about degree requirements lean on 履修, while 受講 shows up in more everyday contexts like a one-off workshop.
学位, 学部, 学会 all start with 学 - are they related?
They share the kanji 学 (study/learning) but point at completely different things: 学位 is the degree itself (博士 or 修士), 学部 is a faculty or school within a university, and 学会 is an academic society or conference where 研究者 present work. Since N2 passages about universities often use two or three of these in one paragraph, it helps to fix the second kanji in mind: 位 = rank/status, 部 = division, 会 = organization/gathering.
