The "handle" problem: 扱う vs 対処する vs 処理する vs こなす
JLPT N2 loves testing near-synonyms, and this word set has an unusually dense cluster of verbs that all translate as "handle" or "deal with" in English but are not interchangeable in Japanese. 扱う is the general-purpose verb for treating or operating something — a product, a customer, a topic — while its more formal cousin 取り扱う is standard in business and legal writing, as in the label 取り扱い注意 ("handle with care"). 対処する is reactive, describing a response to a problem as it comes up, whereas 処理する means processing or disposing of something through a defined procedure, such as data or paperwork. 取り組む describes proactively engaging with a task or challenge over time, and こなす stands apart from the rest — it specifically means handling something skillfully or efficiently, as in こなす a heavy workload, not just dealing with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 保管する, 保存する, and 保つ?
All three mean "to keep" something, but they differ by object. 保管する is used for physically storing an item somewhere safe, such as a document in a locked cabinet; 保存する means preserving something so it doesn't spoil or get lost, covering food, data, and files alike; and 保つ is the most general, used for maintaining an abstract state or condition, as in 健康を保つ ("maintain one's health"). 維持する overlaps with 保つ but is more formal and typically pairs with systems or standards rather than personal states.
Why are there three separate verbs for "transport" — 運搬する, 搬送する, and 輸送する?
Because N2 passages on logistics and infrastructure often distinguish them by what is being moved and how. 運搬する is the general term for carrying goods, typically over a short distance such as a warehouse or construction site; 搬送する is more specialized, used for conveying an injured person by ambulance or moving delicate equipment under careful handling; and 輸送する refers to large-scale freight or cargo transport, as used in shipping and trucking industries. 運搬 and 搬送 share the kanji 搬 ("carry"), which is a useful clue when you meet an unfamiliar compound built from that character.
