Three Verbs, One Reading: osameru/osamaru
収まる, 納まる, and 修める in this list are three of the four common N2 homophones written with different kanji but overlapping readings (the fourth, 治める, isn't in this set). 収まる means something settles into place or a situation reaches a fitting resolution, 納まる means a payment or delivery is settled, and 修める (note the different okurigana, -eru rather than -aru) means to study or master a skill. Since the sound alone gives no clue, choosing the right kanji depends entirely on context — a frequent trap in the N2 kanji-reading section.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 強まる/強める, 高まる/高める, and similar pairs?
These are intransitive/transitive pairs built on the same root: the -aru form (強まる, 高まる, 深まる, 弱まる) describes something changing on its own, while the -eru form (強める, 高める, 深める, 弱める) is transitive and takes an object, describing someone actively causing the change. For example, 関係が深まる means the relationship deepens by itself, while 理解を深める means to actively deepen one's own understanding.
Why does the list include both 判明 and 判明する, or 深化 and 深化する?
Many N2-level Sino-Japanese words (漢語) function as plain nouns on their own but become verbs when paired with する, and both forms appear in real N2 passages — sometimes as a noun marked with が or の, sometimes as a direct predicate. Recognizing the noun form, as in 事実の判明を待つ (waiting for the facts to become clear), is just as important as recognizing the verb form 事実が判明する.
