The notify family and other near-synonym clusters
This list contains a striking cluster of near-synonyms for official notification: 通知する, 通告する, 伝達する, 通達する, 連絡する, and 告げる, which differ mainly in formality and institutional weight rather than meaning. 通達する is specifically an administrative directive circulated within an organization or government body, while 通告する carries a harder edge, often used for ultimatums or legal notice. The same pattern shows up with the three negotiate verbs 交渉する (general), 折衝する (formal, diplomatic), and 談判する (direct, sometimes confrontational bargaining), which N2 fill-in-the-blank questions frequently pit against each other. Also worth noticing: four verbs share the 取り- prefix (取り決める, 取り持つ, 取り次ぐ, 取り消す), a common N2 compound-verb pattern where 取り adds a sense of taking direct action on the base verb.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 拒否する, 拒絶する, and 辞退する?
All three mean to refuse, but they differ in strength and politeness. 拒否する is a neutral, common refusal of a request or demand, while 拒絶する is stronger and more absolute, close to reject outright (also used for medical rejection, as in 拒絶反応). 辞退する is the polite, humble way to decline something offered to you, such as an award or invitation, implying you are stepping back rather than opposing.
How is 仲裁する different from 調停する?
Both mean to mediate, but 仲裁する (arbitration) typically ends in a binding decision imposed by a neutral third party, often in labor or international disputes, while 調停する (conciliation) helps both sides reach their own voluntary agreement, most commonly associated with Japan's family court mediation for divorce and inheritance cases. 取り持つ is the everyday, informal equivalent of either, used for something like mediating between friends or arranging an introduction.
