3 Common Pitfalls

  1. 風 (kaze) is both "wind" and "cold." 風 (kaze/wind) and 風邪 (kaze/cold illness) are written differently in kanji but sound the same. Context makes the meaning clear — 風がつよい vs 風邪をひく.
  2. 足 covers both "leg" and "foot." English distinguishes leg and foot; Japanese does not. 足がいたい could mean either, depending on context.
  3. お腹がすく for hunger. The literal meaning is "my stomach became empty." The full expression is お腹がすきました — don't say just すきました (that means "I liked it").
