24 Essential Japanese な-Adjectives (2026)

Learn 24 must-know Japanese な-adjectives — personality, places, ability, and situations — with example sentences and conjugation tips.

な-adjectives are one of the two main adjective types in Japanese. Unlike い-adjectives (which end in い), な-adjectives require when modifying a noun directly — 静かな部屋 (a quiet room) — and です at the end of a predicate sentence. These 24 adjectives cover personality, places, ability, and everyday situations.

Already know your い-adjectives? Check out the Japanese い-Adjectives guide and compare the two adjective systems side by side.

How な-Adjectives Work

Two rules cover almost every use case:

  1. Before a noun → add な. 静か → 静か部屋 (a quiet room). The な is what names this adjective category.
  2. At the end of a sentence → add です / だ. この部屋は静かです。(This room is quiet.) No な needed.
  3. Past tense → でした / だった. この部屋は静かでした。(This room was quiet.)
  4. Negative → ではありません / じゃない. この部屋は静かではありません。(This room is not quiet.)

Note: きれいな and にぎやかな look like they might have い-adjective patterns, but they are な-adjectives — a common mistake for beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are きれい and にぎやか い-adjectives?

No — both are な-adjectives despite appearing to end in い. きれい → きれいな部屋 (not きれいい). This is one of the most common mistakes beginners make. When in doubt, check: な-adjectives use でした in the past tense, while い-adjectives use かった.

Do I need to add な when using 好き / 嫌い / 大丈夫 at the end of a sentence?

No. End-of-sentence form: 日本語が好きです。(I like Japanese.) The な is only needed before a noun: 好き食べ物 (favorite food).

What is the difference between 大切 and 必要?

大切 (taisetsu) = precious/important in an emotional or valued sense. 必要 (hitsuyou) = necessary/required in a practical sense. 友達は大切です (friends are precious) vs パスポートが必要です (a passport is required).
